Jambo (Hello) Parents, Families and Students!
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year! My name is Mama Tennille Peeler and I am the new principal at Harambee Institute of Science and Technology Charter School. It is my privilege and honor to join HISTCS and the West Philadelphia community. I have been an educator for more than 13 years. Over the years I have served as teacher, teacher leader, math department chair, director of teacher and principal evaluations and now principal. My passion for education and children has afforded me this opportunity and I feel like the luckiest principal in the world to be able to serve here at Harambee!
My main goal is to ensure that every mwatoto (student) is provided the highest quality of education possible in a safe and supportive learning environment. Working together as a team with our staff and parents, I am committed to helping each mwatoto achieve their very best. Every mwatoto is valued and worthy of our best effort. Watoto will be engaged daily to reach new peaks of academic, social and emotional achievement through project based learning and thought provoking instruction. It is our objective to prepare watoto for accepting greater challenges in a technologically driven society and world.
I look forward to an exciting year of learning and growing with our watoto and working with our walimu (professional staff) and you, our parents and community members.
On the following pages you will find important information that will help you and your child prepare for the upcoming school year.
Harambee Grows Farm to School with Seed Change
This year, our students will have more time in the garden along with farm field trips, thanks to a new initiative from the National farm to School Network. Harambee has been selected to participate in Seed Change and awarded a 5,000 mini grant funded by the Walmart Foundation to increase our farm to school activities.
Our #Seed Change mini grant will kick off farm to school activities with a "Harambee Farmer's Market", September 29th (Back to School Night). We are very excited to share our news. We hope to see you all at our healthy, happy, Farmer's Market.
