PTA Committees

  • Academic & Community Services: The Academic & Community Services Committee is responsible for helping ensure the successful implementation of HISTCS’s curriculum enrichment and social programs for students and parents. This also requires the ability to think out-of-the-box when it comes to finding innovative ways towards reestablishing a connection between Harambee and the community. The Community Services aspect of the committee is responsible for executing the yearly community events, such as Backpack for Success (school supply drive), MLK Day of Service, beautification projects, etc. The Beautification Committee is responsible for assisting the School in creating, landscaping, and maintaining outdoor gardens. Work Parties will be held in the Fall and Spring.

  • Arts & Theater Committee: The Arts & Theater Committee is responsible for supporting the cultural arts by bringing visual and performing arts opportunities to the School that is outside of the standard arts and music classes.

  • Community Affairs: Community Affairs Committee is responsible for fostering positive and productive relations with community. They are also responsible for soliciting donations and/or finding sponsors for PTA and PTA-related community events and establishing a relationship with local media to inform them of news worthy community events and happenings related to the School.

  • Communications: The Newsletter Committee is responsible for creating, collecting, designing, editing, and proofreading content for the PTA newsletter. The Website Manager is responsible for creating, maintaining/updating the PTA website.

  • Fundraiser Sales Committee: The Fundraising Committee was established to provide fun and exciting fundraising events and sales while acquiring revenue towards incentives, supplies, and other PTA and/or school events and programs. Collect, organize, and submit orders as well as distribute goods sold upon its return. Also needed to coordinate bake sale events. Bakers welcome!

  • Membership & Orientation Committee: Welcoming new and prospective families by greeting and directing them. Staff tables at Open House, Back-To-School Night, and any other school events. Also, responsible for collecting dues and maintaining membership records. Work closely with the PTA Secretary and Treasurer.

  • Social Events/Hospitality Committee: The Social Events/Hospitality Committee is responsible for helping with picking-up supplies, cooking, serving, and/or cleaning up for all events - Umoja Karamu, Mothers' & Fathers' Day Brunch, Teacher Appreciation Day, etc. Also responsible for hosting refreshment tables during special events at school or any capacity as needed. Bakers are welcome!

Parent volunteers are needed for the following school positions:
  • Lunchtime Attendant – Lunchtime Attendants are responsible for making sure the watoto are following the lunchtime guidelines. (Monday to Friday from 11am – 2pm)
  • Brothers On Patrol (B.O.P.) Team – The B.O.P. Team is a group of Harambee men (staff and faculty) that provides a safe environment for our watoto before and after school. The team is responsible for: 1) standing on post within the 2 to 3-block radius of the school and/or the high traffic areas to provide crossing guard duties, and 2) preventing and resolving any conflict resolution issues between Harambee watoto and the neighboring schools and community. (Monday to Friday 8-8:20am and 3:15-3:45pm.)
