Harambee Institute was developed to encourage children from kindergarten through eighth grade to fully participate in the exploration of science and technology.  Harambees’ vision is to use knowledge of science and technology as a means of promoting self-reliance in the African American community specifically and the world community in general.

Our Mission is “Education for Self Reliance”. We fulfill our mission by offer a challenging education with high expectations without pre-requisites, creating a model for community controlled education, educating and empowering parents to fulfill their role in the educational process, instilling identity, purpose and direction in our students , empowering our students to believe they have the power to improve the conditions of their community, encouraging our students to enter careers of Science and Technology

Our Philosophy

Our Educational Philosophy is that education should lead to self-reliance.  Education should empower students to believe that they have the power to change the conditions of their community.  Our instruction is given within the context of themes that concern the community.  Subjects are unified around the following themes: Afrikan Origins and Community, Civil Rights Struggle and Afrikan images in the media.  Perfornance Standards adopted by the city and state are presented through an African centered lens.  We will satisfy the city and state education standards while developing productive members of the community.

Our goals are simply stated are to prepare our students for success in life and to instill in our children positive attitudes, good behaviors, and strong citizenship practices that will enable them to become productive and responsible members of our community, city and nation. To accomplish these goals, there must be a cooperative effort on the part of the students, teachers, administrators, parents and community.
